Description

Tserniki was similar to Perama boat, with a sharp bow and stern, with straight sternposts and a slanted bow. Most common in the eastern Aegean islands, was being built for fishing boat as well as a merchant ship, reaching up to 18 metres long.
Tserniki boats were usually single masted, with lateen or sakoleva sail. Sakoleva, a trapezoidal sail difficult to handle as there was no way to adapt the sail’s surface according to the wind speed; there were two or three sails on board. But it was ideal for sailing on stormy seas as it would keep the bow on the wave crest, thus enabling sailing when other boats stayed docked.
