TREHANTIRI FISHING BOAT
The most common traditional wooden Aegean boat, still being built today. Records about building trehantiri date back to the 17th century in Hydra. The bow is sharp with straight sternpost and curved with a hooked ending, called “crow”. A wide boat
with exceptional endurance in storms; was used as a merchant, sponge harvesting and fishing boat, as in our days. Single or two masted Trehantiri boats had various sail types. When boat engines emerged, the sails became obsolete and their beauty got lost. The sluggish “touk-touk” sound is connected to the sunset colours as the boats set for their journey in the Aegean.
