The laurel or laurus nobilis is an aromatic evergreen tree or large shrub with green, glossy leaves, native to the Mediterranean region and of course Greece. It is also known as Grecian laurel or bay laurel. It was dedicated to the god of light and of the sun Apollo. Due to its healing properties it was used by the god of medicine Asclepius for the relief of many illments of the human body. It was also used to fashion the laurel wreath of ancient Greece, a symbol of highest status, and was a symbol of victory, glory, honor and eternal youth. The ancient Greeks would place a laurel wreath on the winner athletes and heroes as a tribute of honor.
