Description
A vessel with a sharp stern and bow, straight sternposts and slanted bow. On the stern and bow there was the dinstictive parapet ending (block or mirror) which made the deck surface larger. It was built all over the Aegean by shipbuilders who came from the eastern Aegean. Wider at the waterline, for larger capacity, sailed as a merchant ship, although there are 19 century records for perama with oars used as warships or pirate ships. These vessels had two masts with bratsera, lover or bombarda rigging. Bombarda sabatiera is a variation having psatha sails instead of rada on the main-mast. They were smooth sailing ships and stable on stormy seas , and were most common in Chios island.
